Drinking and Athletics

Involvement in sports is generally considered a helpful in keeping young people healthy and out of trouble, but two new studies, one by the NCAA and the other by the Harvard University School of Public Health conclude that not only do college athletes drink, often to excess, but they also drink more than non-athletes on campus. 

The NCAA study confirmed that drinking is standard behavior among college athletes. It sound that more than 80% of athletes drink. 

The Harvard study looked at alcohol use among college students nationwide including athletes. The investigators found that both male and female athletes were more likely than other students to binge drink, and they more often said getting drunk was an "important reason" for drinking. Athletes overall were 50% more likely to say they usually binged when they drank.
