Parents in Action:
Spotlight on Positive Parenting

Hamilton Township School District is home to Sayen Elementary School. Located in a middle-income community in central New Jersey, Sayen is blessed with an active PTA which was looking for ways to enhance the school program.

When a grant opportunity presented itself the week between Christmas and New Year's, the PTA president and school principal acted quickly. Their successful application brought enough grant money to offer a 5-week parent program to supplement what their youngsters were learning in school.

The K-5 students at Sayen participate in Second Step, a violence-prevention program that is a component offered by Committees for Children. The parent program, A Family Guide to Second Step, reinforces the classroom program with ways to help children control impulse behaviors, manage anger, and develop social and emotional skills.

The absolute proof of success was measured in numbers. Twenty-eight families signed up to participate in the program and attendance actually increased as time went on!! The program was part of a "complete evening" with a family dinner at 6:30 pm and child-care/homework tutorial for the children in another part of the building while the parents participated in the program.
